ICT Tools for Task-Based Activities: Part 1

A growing number of people are using the internet as a platform to upload photos and other material or simply exchange information and share opinions, files and even bookmarks. The tools available to realise all this have become known as web 2.0 which Tim O'Reilly defines on the web site O'Reilly Radar as “the business revolution in the computer industry caused by the move to the internet as platform, and an attempt to understand the rules for success on that new platform”. So, in this module five of such tools that teachers can use either in class or in distance education with their students will be focused on: Blogs, Computer Mediated Communication (CMC), Online Polls, Podcasts and Wikis. Whether participants have already had a bit of experience with some of these tools, or if they are absolutely new to them, this module will help them to implement these successfully with their students.

Computer Mediated Communication

Apart from being familiarised with the term Computer Mediated Communication which defines the communication over the Internet, participants will be looking into possibilities of using chat software for foreign language teaching (FLT). With that kind of software teachers and students can communicate with each other and with other teachers, students or groups around the world. Furthermore, it will be discussed how web conferencing can be used in education especially in language teaching. Practical hints on how to use chat in education, particularly in FLT will be provided, too. Moreover, three web conferences will be held during the course using three free different applications: Skype, FlashMeeting and Yugma.

Blogs could safely be described as ‘Websites for the masses’ as they are a quick and easy way to get oneself online. In this module participants will learn how to successfully use them in the classroom. Several tasks will help the participant getting to know more about blogs and blogging. Additionally, they will also learn how to apply blogging skills to their teaching.

After completing the course Podcasts participants will be able to enrich their teaching techniques with podcasting. They will be able to find, evaluate and use existing podcasts in their educational. Apart from that, participants will learn how to subscribe to, create and publish podcasts and also explore ways of using podcasts as a curriculum resource and personalized learning.

A wiki is a collection of web pages where users can create and edit web page content using any web browser. Its purpose is to enhance the community among the users and thus instigate a sense of responsibility as something useful is built for everyone. Wiki supports hyperlinks and has a simple text syntax not only for creating new pages but also links between internal pages.

Having been introduced to the idea of a wiki course participants will evaluate educational wikis and their use for language teaching, create their own wiki and finally comment on as well as edit the other participants’ wikis.

Online Polls

Considering asking and answering questions is such a fundamental part of communicating in a foreign language, so polls and questionnaires contain a myriad of opportunities for language learners, teachers and schools.

Teachers can use online polls before starting a new class to try to gain some insight into the needs of their students (needs analysis.) They can also be used to gain feedback part way through or at the end of a course. Teachers can even use online polls as simple online tests when there isn’t a more suitable option available (Moodle etc.)

As language teachers however, our main area of interest is likely to be how they can be used with our students in class or in distance learning. Online polls really come into language teaching when students write and respond to their own polls. Not only can teachers get their students to write polls to practice certain areas of vocabulary, lexical sets and grammar, but they can then use these polls as a springboard for further discussion in class or online afterwards. So, in this course participants will learn how to successfully use them in their every day teaching.
