ICT Tools for Task-Based Activities Part 3

The focus in the last part of tools for task-based activities is on tools that deal with researching and retrieving information from different types of encyclopaedia in a fast and efficient way. This is particularly important since searching the internet target- and time-oriented plays an increasing role in education as well. It is not only vital to know how to use dictionaries and encyclopaedia that are available online appropriately, but also exploit services that have become popular more recently like RSS or social bookmarking.

Online Dictionaries and Encyclopaedia

Dictionaries, encyclopaedias and thesauruses (D.E.T.) have moved on in leaps and bounds since the times many of us would have used them to help us study languages. No longer are they the preserve of weighty old tomes taking up an unfair amount of space in our bags or on our desks, breaking our backs every time we need to move them from one place of study to another. Now they are available online, on CD ROM, or even as a download for a mobile phone! In this course participants will be looking at each of these tools and familiarising themselves with their functions. They will then look at a few different lesson plans (and hopefully try them out with their students) before planning a lesson to use a D.E.T. with their students.

RSS

RSS is a family of Web feed formats used to publish frequently updated content such as blog entries, news headlines or podcasts. An RSS document, which is called a "feed", "web feed", or "channel", contains either a summary of content from an associated web site or the full text. RSS makes it possible for people to keep up with their favourite web sites in an automated manner that is easier than checking them manually. In this course participants will be looking at what is arguably one of the most useful tools available to the digital teacher: RSS. They will be setting up and comparing different RSS readers to assess their relative strengths and weaknesses as well as find and recommend some RSS feeds to each other.

Social Bookmarking

Social bookmarking shares some similarities with RSS. Both of them help internet users organise their online activities. Unlike RSS will social bookmarking tools help users organise each and every website address (URL) they want, regardless of its technical settings. It can be hard for busy teachers to keep on top of the ever growing amount of high-quality materials available on the internet. Simply remembering all the URLs can be a daunting enough task. Why not just bookmark them using the favourites button on your web browser? I hear them all cry. Actually, bookmarking a website using the "favourites" is a good way to start organising one’s favourite links. Storing their favourites in their internet browser does unfortunately have several drawbacks, e.g. the list of URLs is tied to just one computer. When users want to access them from a different place, like the home computer, an internet café, a school etc, the bookmarks are not there. Another problem is organising the URLs and folders created to keep groups of links together into "themes". One of the main benefits of social bookmarking is that it is web-based, like an online RSS reader, so that users can access their links from any computer. The benefits of this are huge, especially for teachers who have to work from more than one computer: the URL links will travel with them! This module will teach participants how to use social bookmarking and how to successfully apply it to their teaching. By completing several tasks participants will learn the basics of del.icio.us, one social bookmarking tool. They will also look at a couple of the unique things that social bookmarking can offer them.
